Believe it or not

I have finally reached the end of my mug posts! This year I have purchased several additions and managed to lose only one (thanks, honey! LOL!). My posted collection does not include my husband's collection (yes, he has a few of his own, but he drinks coffee mostly so they don't count ;) ) It also doesn't include my teapot/teacup combo sets (more on those later!), and probably doesn't include a few of the Christmas mugs. And I haven't even touched on my otherwise growing and fairly extensive tea related collection of teapots and tea accessories.

But, at least I managed to get all my mugs posted about, and no, oh-friend-of-mine-that-issued-the-original-challenge, I don't appear to have an entire year's worth of mugs. So, my final count, minus anything mentioned above, is 178. Today's teacup/mug isn't included in this count, because it's not quite a stand alone.

Today I am enjoying an English Toffee rooibos.

Alone again, naturally

I was trying to think of something using the word natural, when that lyric popped into my head. No, I'm not alone. I actually am surrounded by amazing people.

I thought of the word natural because of the mug. It's a simple pottery mug. And I am enjoying a gingerbread chai rooibos today.

Excited

Yesterday afternoon I was gifted with one of those smaller blenders, where you place a cup on top and blend directly into the cup. I am so excited, because I regularly drink smoothies, and this will make doing it so much quicker!

Of course, smoothies will never replace my daily tea habit. Today it is a peppermint mocha rooibos.

Chai at night

Nearly all of my chai teas are made with black, or green, or even white tea. Having one I can drink at night doubles my pleasure.

This is a spice dragon red chai, made with rooibos.

Fall is here!

Happy dances! My favorite season of the year! I am celebrating my drinking a rooibos tea with vanilla and spices. But I'm not howling at the moon. That was earlier this week...;)

It's my anniversary!

Fourscore and seven years ago...

It kinda feels that long, but it's really only (only?) 36 years ago today I married my first real love. Since he's at work, I'm going to enjoy a chocolate pecan rooibos in a mug that is definitely mine. It even says so!

And this is what's on the bottom:

Who doesn't like chocolate?

I still haven't finished going thru my chocolate teas. I think I probably have a few more still to go. Who am I kidding? Of course I do! Today it is a strawberry chocolate rooibos.

Crazy cat lady

I have a friend, Brenda, who everyone knows as the crazy cat lady. When I use this mug, I can't help but think of her. Plus, I'm drinking a banana chocolate rooibos tea today, because everyone knows you have to be a little bananas to love cats. And I do!

Birthdays

Yesterday just so happened to be my daughter-in-law's birthday. So, in her honor, I am drinking a red velvet chocolate tea. She doesn't really drink tea, but she does love red velvet. Love you, Hailee!

Tea Sandwich Tuesday: Celery and Walnut Tea Sandwiches

We're recovering from spring break. Doesn't that sound strange, having to recover from time off? But it is nice to get back into our normal routine.

Celery and Walnut Tea Sandwiches

Mix cream cheese with chopped celery and walnuts, and spread on bread. Cut into desired shapes. Serve. Enjoy!

Wasn't that amazingly easy?

Today I slowly sip, and enjoy, a caramel apple rooibos tea. Peace be with me. Isn't this mug sweet? The handle is the tail.

The Belgian Way of Tea

Belgium is another country where coffee is king. But Belgians do seem to love green tea, as they focus on health and wellness. Herbal teas, however, still outnumber regular tea by a 2:1 margin.

I raise my tea mug to Belgium today, and drink a mate, green, and rooibos tea with peach and blackberry.

Tea for your winter skin

I am surprised by how many tea blends include rooibos. And it's a good replacement for tea drinkers who don't want caffeine. But it's also good for your skin.

If you find that the winter has not been kind and your skin is dry, brew up some rooibos. It is a source of aspalathin, an antioxidant known for its anti-inflammatory - and youth preserving! - qualities. Some research suggests that drinking a cup a day of rooibos can repair your complexion as effectively as expensive face creams!

So, drink up! I'm having a rooibos gingerbread chai:

Tea Sandwich Tuesday: Chicken Salad

I love Delight Soy Nuggets. I'm bummed my closest Whole Foods doesn't carry them. Any time I visit a different Whole Foods, I check the frozen section for them, and if they carry them, I buy at least two. I think it makes the best tasting chicken salad.

Chicken Salad Tea Sandwiches

One package Delight Soy Nuggets (baked and cooled, then shredded)
1 c. vegan  mayonnaise
1 t. tarragon
1/3 c. chopped onion

Mix everything together and spread on bread. Slice bread into preferred shape. Serve. Enjoy!

Today is a chocolate chai rooibos.

Food on the Fifteenth: Green Tea Marinated Cucumbers

Gastritis means avoiding certain foods, like tomatoes and citrus. I'm guessing maybe vinegar, too, but since the doc didn't say...

Green Tea Marinated Cucumbers

1 t. sesame oil
1 t. soy sauce
2 T. rice wine vinegar
1 c. strong brewed green tea
1 t. sesame seeds
1 t. shredded, dried seaweed
One cucumber (or more), peeled and sliced into chunks

Mix everything together, cover and marinate for at least two hours. I found the leftover marinade to be a pretty good salad dressing.

It's a windy day, and feels fall-ish. So I'm having a pumpkin spice rooibos.

Herbal Tea

When you think of tea, what do you think? Green? Black? Oolong? Some people think of herbal. I have several herbal teas, myself. But herbal teas are not actually tea.

Herbal teas are usually a blend of herbs, spices, flowers, roots, and fruits, and for all of you Hercule Poirot fans, they are more accurately called tisanes. Most studies done on tea do not include herbal concoctions. Another tea that has become quite popular is rooibos, sometimes called red tea. It, too, is an herbal drink and not a real tea. Herbal teas by their very nature are caffeine free. Sometimes an herbal may be mixed with a true tea, so read labels carefully if you are trying to reduce or eliminate caffeine.

Rooibos with turmeric, cinnamon, and vanilla. The mug is a gift from a good friend.

Fall Means Time To Drink More Tea!

Thank goodness fall has arrived! This summer may have been better than last year, but it was still pretty hot here. We have a few more days of heat yet to come, but knowing that cooler temps are just around the corner makes everything better!

We celebrated the fall equinox with some light fare - salad greens over pumpkin pie spiced cornbread croutons, fruit soup and a cranberry/raspberry sorbet. If you are interested, you can find those recipes here. But more than good food, fall means more hot tea drinking! Summers require iced tea. Fall, winter and spring all cry out for curling up with a cup of hot tea and a good book. In fact, hubby and I were out shopping today and I bought two brand new teas that I can't wait to brew! A chocolate ginger and a hazelnut chai.

Today, however, I began my fall equinox morning with a cup of spiced apple chai in a farm themed mug. Seemed appropriate!

There are so many types of tea out there, and often I get asked to explain the differences. I'll try to explain some of it.

Black tea - mature and fully fermented. Has the highest caffeine content
Oolong tea - fermented half as long as black. Rests in between black and green, caffeine wise.
Green tea - dried, but not fermented. Half the caffeine of black.
White tea - dried but not heated or fermented. Light and delicate and low in caffeine.

Herbal - not really a tea. It's true!

Black, oolong, green and white tea all come from the same plant - Camellia sinensis. When it is picked and how it is treated determines if it is black, oolong, etc. Tea contains catechins, a type of antioxidant.Catechins are highest in concentration in white and green teas, while black tea has substantially fewer due to its oxidative preparation. However, research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture has suggested the levels of antioxidants in green and black tea do not differ greatly.

Herbal teas come from flowers and fruits, but not the Camellia tea plant. They typically do not contain any caffeine.

So what the heck is chai tea? Usually a black, but now can be found in green, white and red teas, that is spiced. The most common spices are cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and pepper. You may have heard of a chai latte? That's chai tea with milk. I don't care for it myself, but a lot of people do.

And now I've thrown in red tea. What is red tea? It comes from another plant entirely, and contains no caffeine. It is also known as rooibos and redbush tea.

Brewing time can make a difference in how much caffeine you get, as well. A two minute difference can double the amount of caffeine. Brew whites for a shorter period than greens, brew greens for a shorter time than oolong, brew oolongs for a shorter time than blacks - otherwise the tea can develop what I call a *bite* and for some people, that is unpleasant. If you've encountered someone who didn't like the taste of tea, this could be the reason. Herbal teas can brew as long as you like.

Now, go find a new tea to try!
